LifeProof iPhone 4/4S Case Review

I’ve always been on the lookout for fun, useful cases for my iPhone 4. I’ve gone through a few that look good, but don’t do much for protection, and some that really protect the phone but detract from the sleek looks. I didn’t buy a compact cool looking phone to slap a 3 lb bulky plastic case on it that makes it uncomfortable in my pocket. For a while, my favorite phone protection was the Zagg full body InvisibleSHIELD iPhone scratch protection. It looked great and still preserved the looks of my phone, but of course it provided almost zero protection if I dropped it, which I did, and luckily it only took a small chip out of the corner of the glass. So I went on the lookout for a good looking protective iPhone case.

During the summers here in Michigan, we spend a lot of time on the water, kayaking, boating, fishing, etc. So I did a little searching for a waterproof case, but couldn’t find anything that I really liked. Until one day walking through Best Buy, I stumbled across this LifeProof-Gen 2 case advertising it was waterproof, dirtproof, snowproof, and shockproof. Best of all, it wasn’t big and bulky! I had to have it, so I brought it home.

It does not come with instructions, instead a link to their website where they have instructional videos here. Before you put your phone into the case, they instruct you to test the case first by assembling it without your phone inside, and then submerging it into water (I put mine into the bathroom sink) with a weight on top so it doesn’t float to the top, and leave it there for 1 hour. Then take the case back apart to see if there is any water inside the case. It passed the test with flying colors, so I then followed the instructional videos to take it apart and put my phone inside.

I really like how slim the case is, and it doesn’t feel bulky in my pocket. There is a flap at the bottom of the case that opens up to plug the phone into the USB charger, but it will not work with dock connections. The flap has a soft rubber strip that seals the phone up when you click the flap back shut. The headphone jack has a screw in plug that you have to remove to plug in headphones, but the hole is only big enough to fit the Apple headphones. If you have aftermarket headphones, you have to use the provided headphone adapter that screws in, and has a pigtail wire to plug in your headphones. I find this is the first problem I had with the case. I use Apple headphones, so the pigtail is not an issue for me, but then I have to find a place to put the little screw in plug so I don’t lose it while my headphones are plugged in. I wish they had put a place on the case I could screw in the plug while the headphone socket is in use. If you use your aftermarket headphones, there is a little holder on the pigtail for the plug. A plus for the pigtail adapter, it is waterproof, so in the case that you have waterproof headphones, you could listen to your Jaws soundtrack while snorkeling. One of the features I have yet to use, but will update this post when I do, is taking pictures and video under water. Here is a video taken with phone while snorkeling. Unfortunately, it’s wintertime here in Michigan, so unless I join the polar bear club, I wont be taking underwater pictures anytime soon.I also like that you can buy attachments for the case, like a bracket to mount the phone to any GoPromount, or a mount to attach your phone to the handlebars on your bike. The case is available black, white, pink and purple. It truly is a “Life Proof” case, I believe this thing could take just about anything you throw at it.Keep an eye out for updates to this review with in use videos and pictures putting the case to the test.
LifeProof will soon be adding 5 new vibrant color options, and also an add-on Lifejacket float for those folks like me who like to take their phone out into the water with them.
