Xbox One Backward Compatibility Explained

Let’s be honest

Most of us have the best of intentions when a new console generation emerges. For example when the Xbox One launched, many of you vowed to play both the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One. In your mind it is very logical. You have games on both consoles that you enjoy. Then it happens. Slowly over time that poor Xbox 360 rarely is turned on and soon those games just seem to fade from your memory.

One of the huge surprises from the Xbox Media Brief last June at E3, was the announcement that Xbox is bringing Backward Compatibility to Xbox One this fall. Well, it’s fall and we now have a list of over 100 Xbox 360 games that you can now play on your Xbox One!

Go back in time and listen to our reactions to the Xbox One Backward Compatibility announcement. Skip to 08:28.

Xbox Gamers Win

As avid Xbox gamers, we love having Xbox One Backward Compatibility. This allows us to easily enjoy many games we have previously purchased. We are also eager to check out Xbox 360 games that we may have missed originally. The awesome bonus is that many of these games are most likely at great prices now! This is just another way to enjoy great Xbox games all in one place and at no additional charge!

Mike Ybarra, Director of Program Management for Xbox

“At Xbox, we believe that gaming is universal and should be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. Our philosophy since launching Xbox One two years ago has been to put gamers at the center of everything we do and create the best, most seamless gaming experience possible. We’re taking a major step forward in that journey on November 12 when we start rolling out the New Xbox One Experience with Xbox One Backward Compatibility.”

How Does Xbox One Backward Compatibility Work?

  • Xbox Backward Compatibility begins for everyone November 12th.
  • Not all games will be available for Backward Compatibility.
  • Check the updated Xbox One Compatibility site for current games.
  • Going forward all Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles will be Backward Compatible.
  • New Xbox 360 games will be added over time.
  • Xbox 360 games purchased digitally: This will show up in the “Ready to Install” “Games and Apps” section of your console (scroll all the way to the right).
  • Xbox 360 disc-based games: Insert the game disc and it will download to your hard drive.
  • Yes, you have to put the disc in each time you want to play the disc-based games.

Enjoy Xbox One Features on Xbox 360 Backward Compatible Games

Being able to play your last gen games on the current gen system, means that you get to add in some enhanced features that you always wanted on your 360. Now, when you are battling with FemShep in Mass Effect, you can take screenshots and use the Xbox Game DVR to record and edit your favorite moments.
